Bitterroot River Fishing Report + Rating

3.5/5

March 22, 2024

The Bitterroot has gone up the last few days, but has stabilized and should be dropping.  There’s quite a bit of junk coming down the river, but it’s still very fishable and should start to drop over the next few days.  Skwala’s are out and dry fly fishing is happening.  Rolling Stones, Rogue Stones, Water Walker’s, Pav’s Sweet Dreams, Chubby’s and Blackout Stones fished tight to cover.  Drop a Front St. Stone, Rubberlegs, Dark Perdigon or San Juan off the back.  Streamer fishing should get better with clouds coming for the next week or so.  Stick with small streamers like Lil Kim’s, Space Invaders, Mason’s Juniors, Mini-Dungeons and Sweeney Todds.

There are a lot of downed trees and blockages in the Bitterroot.  Give our Missoula fly shop a call for up-to-date information.

1/2 off Friday’s are still happening, every Friday all year long. (1/2 off your first dozen dries or nymphs)

Montana SNOTEL Current Snow Water Equivalent % of Normal

SWE is an acronym for Snow Water Equivalent, signifying the quantity of liquid water present in snow. Essentially, if you were to take a certain snow depth and melt it, the resulting water height would be representative of the SWE. This is how we can predict river flows and water levels for fishing season.
