Missouri River Fishing Report + Rating

Fall is here across much of Western Montana, and it’s crept over into the Missouri River, as well. Like the fishing around here, anglers on the Missouri find themselves in limbo between the dog days of summer, terrestrial-focussed fishing and our lovely fall hatches. Nymphing below Holter Dam has been consistent. Anglers throwing the bobber around now focussing on sow bugs and small mayfly nymphs. Try Get Down Sows, Weight-for-it Sows, Jig PLT nymphs, Jigged BWOs and zebra midges if you are headed over the divide.

October caddis fishing can be good this time of year. Try skating a big stimulator or PMX around in the evening and you may be rewarded with some explosive eats. Small BWO cripples will become a must have, too, as we get further into the month of October. Small Psuedos still and will be mixed in there, and a challenging dry fly game if you’re willing to play. Streamer anglers throwing around small patterns like Thin Mints, Sparkle Minnows, and buggers. A bright fly on a bright day stripped from the bank or swung may do the trick.
