Looking for advice on packing for a Montana fly fishing trip? Or maybe you’re wanting to prepare for a Missoula guided fly fishing trip? Make sure you’re packing the proper gear so you can make the most of your experience. As one of Montana’s best fly shops and fly fishing outfitters, we’ve learned a lot over the years and know exactly what will keep you comfortable while you’re here. Our Montana fly fishing trip packing list will help you make the most of your Missoula fly fishing experience!

 

If you’re looking for a Missoula guided fly trip, join us on Montana’s best rivers. We have years of experience guiding the Clark Fork River, Bitterroot River, and Blackfoot River. We provide the gear you’ll need, but you’ll still want to bring the appropriate clothing we have listed here.

 

Clothing (Summer)

  1. Synthetic long or short sleeve shirt
  2. Quick drying pants or shorts
  3. Sandals or wading boots with neoprene guard socks (shoes you don’t mind getting wet)
  4. Ball Cap or Wide Brimmed Hat
  5. Neck Gaiter (Buff or similar)
  6. Packable Raincoat

Clothing (Spring or Fall)

  1. Base Layers (Wool or synthetic)
  2. Fleece Pants
  3. Fleece Jacket or Pullover or Vest
  4. Down or Synthetic Puffy Jacket
  5. Wool or Synthetic mid to heavy weight socks
  6. Breathable Waders
  7. Non-Studded Wading Boots (if you’re floating) anything for wading
  8. Stocking Cap (Wool is best)
  9. Fingerless Gloves
  10. Rain Jacket

Gear (Most provided on guided trip but also available at our Missoula fly shop)

  1. 5 or 6 weight 9ft rods
  2. Comparable reel with 5 or 6 weight forward lines
  3. 9ft 3x – 4x leaders (High water times you can get away with 2x leaders)
  4. 3x-5x tippet
  5. Streamer fishermen 12-15 lb. flourocarbon
  6. Flies for the season (Give us a call before you come out)
  7. Floatant
  8. Bobbers aka “strike indicators”
  9. A good hip, chest, sling pack or vest that will keep things organized
  10. Polarized sunglasses

 

Other Random Items You’ll Probably Wish You’d Packed

  1.  Camera
  2. Dry bag or waterproof gear bag
  3. Sunscreen
  4. Chapstick
  5. Duct Tape
  6. Stripping Guards
  7. Sun Gloves
  8. First Aid Kit (All our guides carry these in their boats)
