Fall is one of the greatest times to do some Montana fly fishing. Not only is it beautiful here, the temperatures are great and the fish are happy and hungry. However, it does present some unique challenges to even the most experienced angler. Weather is often quick-changing, water is low and clear, and the bugs hatching are smaller than our summer stoneflies.
That being said, this is still one of our favorite times of the year to get out on the water so we’ve been busy getting ready for fall! We’ve got some great new gear to make the most out of your Montana fall fly fishing season below!
Simms G3 Stockingfoot Wader
Simms makes great waders, that’s a fact. Not only are the G3s their best-selling wader, they were engineered to live in the water and to keep you dry and comfortable while doing it! They’re built with a 4-layer Gore-Tex membrane on the lower half that is highly durable and puncture-proof to protect your investment and your legs. These waders will be the fishing equivalent of your favorite pair of jeans, lasting you a good long time with plenty of memories on the water.
Scott Radian Fly Rod
As Scott puts it, there’s finally a fly rod that brings together “fast and feel.” With the Radian, you no longer have to choose between power and precision. This fast rod has a flexible tip that performs well at multiple distances. It’s an amazing do-it-all rod that will definitely be in our collection for years to come.
Hatch Gen 2 Finatic Reel
This reel was highly-anticipated, and we know why. This has been one of Hatch’s top-selling reels for years, and they did a great job of improving it to be even higher performing than it was before. It’s gotten a facelift on the outside with an updated finish, as well as an updated window frame design, added seals to keep water and dirt out, and an Ultraflon sleeve to reduce corrosion and keep things spinning smoothly. You’ll spend some great days on the water with it this fall!
We have plenty of water in the rivers, there’s very little smoke in the air and the temps have cooled off nicely to give our rivers an early jumpstart to fall. We have great hatches of Tricos and we are already seeing Hecubas and a few BWO’s on the cloudy days. We will be throwing hoppers throughout September and when in doubt don’t forget about ants! You don’t want to miss out on some of the best dry fly fishing of the year!
As always, stop by the store if you want the inside scoop on water conditions and more, we’ll look forward to seeing you there or out on the water!
