CURRENT REPORT
Spring has started to show on the Missouri near Craig, MT! With the usual late winter fare being available—sow bugs, midges—look for the deep slots and holes for the best success. However, as the water is warming up, trout will start to move into the shallow flats where you can target them with a light nymphing set up or on a low wind, cloudy day, choose a long leader and a small midge like a sprout midge or a griffith's gnat.
The dedicated streamer anglers are finding good success with sinking lines and flies like mini dungeons or sparkle minnows. And for those who want to fish two-handed rods, there is no better time of year than late fall through early spring for trout spey. Fish a light tip like a 50/50 floating/T-8 and find the broad runs with good current, and you will find success using a variety of small sculpin or leech fly patterns.
7-DAY OUTLOOK
The extended forecast is showing a breezy and cloudy forecast as we transition back to cooler, wetter weather. While dry anglers this time of year are looking for calmer days, nymphing and streamer fishing will still be excellent even when the wind is blowing.
