CURRENT REPORT
The Blackfoot seems to have cooled off in the last couple weeks. We are in that in-between-season where our salmonfly and goldenstones are on the way out, as we anxiously await our terrestrial fishing on the Blackfoot. Goldenstones, yellow sallies, PMDs, caddis still fluttering around.
Be prepared to fish two ways: dry-dropper fishing and/or small dry fly fishing.
Dry-dropper fishing is the name of the game right now. Pick your favorite foam fly in a #08-12 and get out there. Our favorites are easy to see and bouyant enough to hold-up a substantial dropper: Chubby Chernobyls, Dancin Rickys, Fools Golds, True Wing Stones and Clark Fork stones.
Twenty Inchers, Zirdles, Prince Nymphs, Duracells, Shuck Its, Hares Ears and Jig PTs have worked well as droppers. Make sure to play with depth on your dropper. Think deep to start the day, and shorten it up as they day goes on and fish rise in the water column.
Lots of anglers looking for heads in the afternoon and evening. These big, picky trout will be looking for mayflies, caddis and the occasional yellow sally. PMD duns in #16-18 and caddis patterns like the Trans. Emerger, HF Caddis and X-Caddis have worked well for picky fish in the evening. Stimulators, Hippie Stompers, Para. Adams and Purple Hazes also fooling fish.
Don't forget about streamer fishing on the Blackfoot. If they get shy to the big foam fly, reach for a small flashy streamer like a Sir Sticks-a-Lot, Space Invader, Sparkle Minnow or Goldie. Focus on the deep plunge pools, boulders and riffles (summer water) for streamer-chasers on the Blackfoot.
Looking Forward
While the Blackfoot has seemed to cool off over the last week, we have some awesome terrestrial fishing on the horizon: spruce moths, ants, hoppers, beetles, etc. will be here before we know it!
