There's some great terrestrial fishing happening on the Blackfoot right now. PMDs and caddis still fluttering around, with nocturnal stone patterns working well early. Just starting to see fish eating spruce moths, with hopper and ant fishing in the early afternoon. The spruce moth fishing this time of year can be epic. Get after it!
Be prepared to fish two ways: dry-dropper fishing and/or small dry fly fishing. Fish will be congregated in the quicker riffles and buckets, as the water heats up midday.
Dry-dropper fishing is the name of the game right now. Pick your favorite foam fly in a #08-12 and get out there. Our favorites are easy to see and bouyant enough to hold-up a substantial dropper: Chubby Chernobyls, Henneberry Hoppers, Juicy Hoppers and Water Walkers.
#08-12 Pats Rubberlegs, Zirdles, Prince Nymphs, Duracells, Shuck Its, Hares Ears and Jig PTs have worked well as droppers. Make sure to play with depth on your dropper. Think deep to start the day, and shorten it up as they day goes on and fish rise in the water column.
Spruce moth patterns like Billy's Butterfly, Potter's Fat Head, and Snowshoe Moth are fooling fish mid-morning. Reach for a small hopper, ant or beetle in the afternoon. CFO Ants, Glitter Ants, Heifer Hoppers, Morrish Hoppers, and Plan Bs are fooling fish along cutbanks and similar structure.
Don't forget about streamer fishing on the Blackfoot. If they get shy to the big foam fly, reach for a small flashy streamer like a Sir Sticks-a-Lot, Space Invader, Sparkle Minnow or Goldie. Focus on the deep plunge pools, boulders and riffles (summer water) for streamer-chasers on the Blackfoot.
Looking Forward
While the Blackfoot has seemed to cool off over the last week, we have some awesome terrestrial fishing on the horizon.
