CURRENT CONDITIONS
The Bitterroot has fished well this week for those braving the flows. While still high, the river clarity is great and the fish are hungry. All sub-surface at the moment. The good ol' worm has proven most effective. We like the Worminator, Squirm and Jig SJ. Big stonefly nymphs are a strong second. TB Pat's, DB Stones, TJ Hookers, Jigglers, and Front St. Stones all catching fish right now.
We are starting to see PMDs consistently on the Bitterroot in spots. Caddis here and there, too. Nymphing a caddis or mayfly nymph like the Jig PT, TNT PMD, Blowtorch, Duracell, Shuck It or Hares Ear can be effective if you find yourself in a hatch. Nymph heavy and deep. Leave the fast water for the floaters: fish in the soft inside-bends and pools. The bulk of your fish will be holding there.
Streamer fishing can be great right now. You can get away with a big streamer this time of year. Articulated Sparkle Yummies, Bangtails, Shake and Bakes are a few of our favorite articulated streamers. Get out there!
Looking Forward
Salmonflies on the horizon. While this hatch is relegated to the upper Bitterroot and West Fork, don't be afraid to nymph the "big bug" throughout the Bitterroot. This kickstarts our awesome summer dry fly hatches!
Goldenstones (the salmonfly's little brother) are surely right around the corner. Often overlooked, this hatch can make for excellent dry fly fishing while others are chasing the salmonfly madness.
FLOATERS BEWARE
Lots of trees are down again this year and a few places are dangerous. Give our Missoula fly shop a call for up-to-date information. 1/2 off Fridays are still happening, every Friday all year long. (1/2 off your first dozen dries or nymphs)
