CURRENT REPORT
Salmonflies are here on the mighty Blackfoot! Fishing has been stellar throughout the river, with salmonflies being spotted throughout the system.
Focus subsurface first thing on the Blackfoot. Salmonfly nymphs like #04-08 Pats, TJ Hookers, Sili-Leg Stones, Yuk Bugs and Dbl Bead stones should be your main focus subsurface. Fish these 2'-4' underneath your favorite salmonfly dry or indicator. Leave your 5x at home! This is big tippet fishing!
For salmonfly dries, we're having luck with the more natural-colored patterns: Dancin Rickys, Emma's Stones, Fools Golds and Water Walkers. Fish these along the banks and along structure–– the fish will be looking for them!
Goldenstones, PMDs, Green Drakes and Caddis also hatching here and there. Make sure you're covered with these subsurface–– especially as they get keen to stonefly nymphs. Prince Nymphs, Duracells, Shuck Its, Hares Ears and Jig PTs have worked well as droppers.
Dead-drifting Sparkle Minnows, Kreelex Minnows, Dungeons and Woolly Buggers can also be effective.
Looking Forward
Great fishing on the Blackfoot should continue through the rest of the month, but the salmonfly hatch likely will not! Get out now if you want to get in on the salmonfly madness!
