CURRENT REPORT
Great fishing only continuing in the Missoula area, and the Blackfoot is no exception!
Flows near Bonner 650cfs, with water temps hovering around the mid 60s. We're in that awkward time between our incredible summer hatches and terrestrial fishing. Just starting to see spruce moths mid morning. Don't miss out on this awesome dry fly hatch! We like the Potter's Moth, Spruce Almighty and Billy's Butterfly.
Getting out there early will work to your advantage, as the afternoons and evenings are less productive. Start the day dry-dropper fishing with a big foam stonefly up top. We like the Water Walkers, Clark Fork Stones and Supa-Dupa Stones. We are seeing nocturnal stones early, with a handful of goldenstones still around. Subsurface, focus on Pat's Rubberlegs, Explosion Stones, TJ Hookers, Jig Duracells, flashy Peridgons and Prince Nymphs. Smaller stonefly dry fly patterns like a Stimulator, PMX and Plan Bs working, too. Still fishing small PMDs, Caddis and Yellow Sallies in the evening. Don't forget about these hatches this time of year. Purple Hazes, Brindlechutes and Para-wulffs fished either on their own or behind a larger stonefly dry will produce fish. Anglers in the evening are seeing plenty of fish up looking for caddis and spent PMDs.
Streamer fishing is a great option either in the morning, evening or between hatches. Strip or swing a Sparkle Minnow, Kreelex or Lil Kim through swift riffles or rocky structure and hold on!
Looking Forward
Get out there while the getting is good! Flows will continue to drop on the Blackfoot, creating more options for the wade angler. Terrestrials like ants, hoppers and beetles will slowly become the ticket into next month. Until then, get in on the action!
