CURRENT REPORT
The Blackfoot bumped this week, but has since dropped significantly due to cooler nighttime temperatures. Forecasted cool temperatures should cause the Blackfoot to drop back down into better conditions throughout the coming week.
Those fishing the Blackfoot should focus their efforts subsurface. Stonefly nymphs like the Front St Stone or Dbl Bead Stone have worked well. SJ worms, Jig PTs, Princy nymphs also working nymphed deep. We are starting to see some BWOs in the afternoon up the Blackfoot. Focus on this hatch subsurface mainly, but keep an eye out for fish rising to them or other midges in the afternoon. Some of our favorites on-top include the Tilt Wing, Thorax BWO and Parachute Adams. Subsurface, Galloup's Jig BWO and other flashy perdigons will do the trick in sizes #16-18. They will start to look for the hatch-matchy flies as the flows clear up. Until then, don't be afraid to nymph the big bugs...
Streamer fishing is great up the Blackfoot this time of year. Still best to swing or dead-drift streamers slowly, as it has remained cool up the Blackfoot. Your streamer needs to get deep and stay deep right now. They aren't in the chasing mood up the Blackfoot right now. Sparkle Minnows, Peanut Envies, and Sir Sticks-a-Lots in flashy colors have produced well and will continue to. If it ain't broke, don't...
Looking Forward
While not the first river that comes to mind when spring fishing, the Blackfoot can be a great option pre-runoff. Great hatches of March Browns and BWOs can be expected soon.
