CURRENT REPORT
Great fishing only continuing in the Missoula area, and the Blackfoot is no exception!
Flows near Bonner 1,150cfs and dropping. The salmonfly hatch is now mostly concentrated on the upper river. Those looking to find the "big bugs" should look in the Canyon and upstream. Goldenstones now the name of the game. Start the day dry-dropper fishing with either a foam salmonfly or goldenstone up top. We like the Water Walkers, Break Dancin Stones and Supa-Dupa Stones. Subsurface, focus on Pat's Rubberlegs, DB Stones, TJ Hookers, Jig PT's, and Prince Nymphs. Lots of Green Drakes out and about. It's a good time to reach for a size 10 or 12 Purple Haze or Brindlechute. Also, we like the CDC Dun, Ms. Tickle and Carnage Drake for this hatch. Caddis out in the evenings, too, with plenty of PMDs and Yellow Sallies intermixed. Don't forget about these hatches this time of year, especially when considering nymph choice. We love the Jig Duracells, Yellow-Spot and Pheasant Tail nymphs as droppers for these hatches. While stoneflies are the "main course," these bugs are still getting eaten, too!
Streamer fishing always is a good idea, espeically this time of year. Dead-drift or strip a Sparkle Minnow, Big Horn Bugger or Mini Dungeon and hold on! Streamer fishing is a great option either in the morning, evening or between hatches.
Looking Forward
Get out there while the getting is good! Flows will continue to drop on the Blackfoot, creating more options for the wade angler. Terrestrials like ants, hoppers and beetles will slowly become the ticket into next month. Until then, get in on the action!
