CURRENT REPORT
Hoot owl restrictions (fishing prohibited 2:00 p.m. to midnight) are in effect for the entire Blackfoot River main stem - from the headwaters at the confluence of Anaconda Creek and Beartrap Creek to the confluence with the Clark Fork River August 2.
Flows near Bonner at 330cfs, with water temps hovering around the mid 60s. These are very low flows for the Blackfoot, making floating difficult in spots but perfect for wade anglers! Focus on riffles and deep dropoffs to find active trout.
Time to start reaching for terrestrials!
Getting out there early will work to your advantage, as the afternoons and evenings are less productive. Start the day dry-dropper fishing with a big foam hopper or nocturnal stonefly up top. We like the Water Walkers, Henneberry Hoppers and Chubby Chernobyls. Subsurface, focus on Pat's Rubberlegs, Explosion Stones, TJ Hookers, Zirdles, Jig Duracells, flashy Peridgons and Prince Nymphs. Those looking to fish dry flies all day will be rewarded with smaller offerings: ants, beetles and small hopppers. Picky fish are known to be fooled by ants this time of year...
Streamer fishing is a great option either in the morning, evening or between hatches. Strip or swing a Sparkle Minnow, Kreelex or Lil Kim through swift riffles or rocky structure and hold on!
Looking Forward
Hopper fishing will only get better on the Blackfoot. The terrestrial bite will continue through the next couple months. Hopefully some cooler temperatures in the future
