CURRENT REPORT

Fall fishing is only improving on the Clark Fork. Flows are low and very managable throughout the entire river. Most float anglers are concentrated on the lower river, as the upper river is low and technical at these flows.

Our fall hatches are taking over on the Clark Fork. October Caddis out here and there. Fish a large orange Stimulator or Chubby for this hatch, with a Hares Ear, Bird of Prey or Squirrel Nymph subsurface. Mahoganies, Psuedos and fall BWOs have replaced the bulk of the trico hatch on the Clark Fork. Fish looking for mayfly adults are falling for Brindlechutes, Purple Para. Roosters, and mahogany cripples like the DL and Better Emerger. Lots of big fish found keyed in on the Psuedo hatch throughout the afternoon. This is a technical game. Small BWO dries on light leader will fool these picky risers.

Your best fishing on the Clark Fork will be found dry-dropper fishing. Still getting big eats on hoppers sporadically. Our favorites are the Sweetgrass Hoppers, Chernobyls and Henneberry Hoppers. Subsurface, fish a TJ Hooker, Pats RL, Jig Squirdle, Jig PT, Duracell and SJ Worm. Fish will be congregated in the slower buckets first thing and move into quicker riffles in the current conditions.

Streamer fishing is a great option in beteween hatches. This will only improve as we get further into October. Sparkle Minnows, Kreelex, Mason's Juniors all getting chased in quick water. Big, articulated streamers starting to move fish, too. Our favorites are Mini Dungeons, Foxy Cleopatras and Rusty Trombones.

Looking Forward

Starting to see October Caddis consistently, which means great hatches of mahogany and BWO mayflies are right around the corner! It feels like fall in Missoula!
