FUTA lodge

Why Choose Futa Lodge
Choosing Futa Lodge means stepping into a secluded and picturesque valley where the fishing is as diverse as the landscape is dramatic. Strategically located in the Valle de las Escalas, the lodge provides direct access to the high-gradient Futaleufú River right at its doorstep, alongside exploratory missions to hidden lakes and intimate tributaries where trout may have never seen a fly. This variety allows anglers to pivot from technically demanding dry-fly fishing during prolific hatches to stripping large streamers for trophy brown and rainbow trout that can exceed five pounds.
The lodge itself is a masterpiece of "rustic luxury," accommodating an intimate group of just six anglers and two non-anglers to ensure a private and romantic atmosphere. The experience is intentionally organic; you aren't just visiting a lodge, you are living in a riverfront home filled with carefully curated memorabilia and local art. Between sessions, guests can explore the backyard fruit gardens, take panoramic horseback excursions, or simply relax in one of the three bright, comfortable cottages as the sound of the gin-clear river provides a constant, soothing soundtrack.
What truly elevates Futa is its commitment to the "Nervous Waters" culinary standard, centered around the local tradition of cooking over an open flame. Every meal is a journey into South American flavor, featuring grass-fed meats, local seafood, and ingredients foraged directly from the surrounding verdant forests and lodge gardens. Paired with world-class Catena Zapata wines, the dining experience mirrors the excellence of the fishing, making Futa Lodge a holistic destination where the "insider tip" reputation is well-earned and the reality exceeds every expectation.
Futa Lodge HIGHLIGHTS
Fly Fish the diverse waters in Chile
Fly fishing at Futa Lodge is characterized by a fascinating variety of techniques used to deceive wild, healthy rainbow and brown trout. The crystal-clear waters of the Futaleufú promote exceptional hatches throughout the day, providing technically demanding opportunities to "match the hatch" for free-rising fish. In the summer, the focus shifts to a terrestrial feeding frenzy where fish slam grasshoppers and beetles on the surface—a visual specialty of the lodge. For those hunting the biggest residents or the occasional sea-run trout, sinking lines and big streamers in the river’s depths are the tools of choice, while hopper-dropper rigs remain the gold standard for exploring the lodge’s intimate home waters and smaller streams.
HOW TO GET THERE
Reaching this remote Chilean paradise can be achieved through two primary routes:
From Argentina: A weekly 2-hour nonstop flight from Buenos Aires to Esquel, followed by a scenic 2-hour transfer (including a border crossing) directly to the lodge.
From Chile: Fly from Santiago to Chaitén (WCH) with a brief stop in Puerto Montt, followed by a 3.5-hour drive. Alternatively, private charters can fly directly from Puerto Montt to the Futaleufú Airport, leaving you with just a short 25-minute drive to the lodge gates.
Intimate Accommodations & Quality
Your home in the Valle de las Escalas is an intimate enclave designed for just eight guests, ensuring a personalized and relaxing stay. Accommodations include three bright and comfortable cottages—strategically placed at the river’s edge or next to the main lodge—and two additional double rooms within the main structure itself. The main lodge serves as the heart of the property, featuring a cozy living room with a crackling fireplace where decades of fishing stories are witnessed by local art and curated memorabilia. With laundry service, panoramic views, and a setting so private it remains a secret among die-hard adventurers, the lodge provides the perfect balance of simplistic charm and modern comfort.
Culinary Experience
The culinary experience at Futa Lodge is a deep dive into Patagonian tradition, where the kitchen comes to life through the use of an open flame. Under the expertise of Nervous Waters’ chefs, guests enjoy succulent grass-fed lamb and beef, as well as fresh local seafood matched with produce from the lodge’s own gardens. Regional identities are woven into every dish, from pine mushrooms foraged in the nearby forests to the Spanish-influenced Curanto—a hearty stew that serves as a tasty local landmark. Each artisanal meal is perfectly complemented by world-class Catena Zapata wines, ensuring that the flavors on your plate are as memorable as the fish on your line.
