Mayazul lodge
At Mayazul Lodge, experience the perfect intersection of legendary Mexican hospitality and a truly world-class, challenging fishery. Nestled in the heart of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve—Mexico’s famed “Permit Alley”—this exclusive and elegant retreat is designed for the passionate angler who lives for the challenge of being face-to-face with the elusive permit. While Ascension Bay has a long tradition of success, nobody does it like Nervous Waters; we’ve created an intimate, four-room sanctuary right on the water where the focus is laser-sharp: providing as many high-quality shots at permit as possible. Supported by a cadre of specialist guides—two per boat—and a service culture that embraces the “Permit Dream,” Mayazul is a collaborative haven for those pursuing the "Vanishing Silver Shadows" alongside world-class bonefish, tarpon, and snook.

Why Choose Mayazul Lodge
Mayazul Lodge is a specialist’s dream, strategically positioned in the epicenter of Mexico’s "Permit Alley." While Ascension Bay is legendary for its permit populations, Mayazul elevates the hunt by providing two expert guides per boat. This tactical advantage doubles your eyes on the water, ensuring you maximize every opportunity to spot and cast to the elusive "vanishing silver shadows." Beyond the permit focus, the bay’s protected mangrove nurseries and crystalline flats teem with bonefish, snook, and resident tarpon, making it one of the most prolific destinations in the Caribbean for a Grand Slam.
The lodge itself is small by design—intimate, elegant, and positioned directly on the ocean to eliminate the need for bumpy overland trailering. With only four guest rooms, the experience is exceptionally private and personalized. You’ll move seamlessly from a chef-prepared breakfast straight to the dock where your traditional panga awaits, saving your energy for the flats. After a day on the bow, you can unwind in a sanctuary of stained wood and ocean breezes, enjoying the peaceful isolation of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere while remaining just far enough away from the daily bustle of Punta Allen.
Exceptional hospitality and modern logistics define the Mayazul experience. Accessible via the new Tulum International Airport (TQO) or Cancun, the journey to the lodge is handled with professional precision so you can focus entirely on the fishery. Every detail is curated to the Nervous Waters standard—from the à la carte menu featuring fresh local seafood and signature cocktails to the top-tier loaner equipment provided at no extra cost. It is an elite, high-performance retreat for anglers who demand world-class guiding and refined comfort in equal measure.
Mayazul Lodge HIGHLIGHTS
Permit Paradise & the grand slam
The fishing at Mayazul Lodge is defined by its staggering diversity and its reputation as the definitive "Permit Capital" of the world. Nestled within the protected 1.3-million-acre Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, the fishery provides a high-stakes arena where the elusive permit is the primary objective, yet it is far from the only prize. Ascension Bay boasts the highest density of bonefish per square acre in the Caribbean, alongside a year-round nursery of resident "baby" tarpon and hard-hitting snook tucked into the mangroves. This unique overlap of habitats—from crystalline white-sand flats to deep lagoon systems—makes a Grand Slam a legitimate daily possibility for any angler. Whether you are stalking a trophy 30-pound permit, casting to massive schools of "honest" bonefish, or testing your nerves against predatory barracuda, jacks, and sharks, Mayazul offers a relentless and visually stunning sight-fishing experience in one of the planet’s most robust saltwater ecosystems.
HOW TO GET THERE
Getting to Mayazul Lodge is a straightforward journey that swaps the bumpy roads of Punta Allen for a scenic boat ride through the heart of the biosphere. Most guests fly into Cancun International (CUN) or the new Tulum International Airport (TQO), both of which offer numerous direct flights from major U.S. hubs. From the airport, a private van will whisk you south on a roughly two-hour drive to the entrance of the Sian Ka’an Reserve. There, you’ll leave the vehicle behind and board a lodge panga for a one-hour boat transfer through a stunning lagoon system teeming with birdlife—a much more comfortable and "fishy" alternative to the traditional overland route. Once you reach the village of Punta Allen, a quick five-minute vehicle transfer brings you directly to the lodge's front door.
Intimate Accommodations & Quality
Designed with an emphasis on intimacy and elegance, Mayazul Lodge is a boutique sanctuary that feels worlds away from the daily bustle of nearby Punta Allen. The lodge is a beautiful structure of stained wood, featuring four spacious, air-conditioned en-suite bedrooms equipped with queen-sized beds to ensure a restful night's sleep soothed by the sound of rustling palms. Guests can unwind in comfortable, sofa-filled lounging rooms, tie flies at the dedicated desk, or enjoy a drink from the quaint open bar while taking in panoramic views from the seaside porches. Every detail, from the 24/7 Wi-Fi and daily laundry service to the welcoming fire pit, is curated to provide a high-end retreat for the serious permit angler. Because the lodge is situated directly on the water, you'll enjoy the luxury of "no trailering"—meaning your guides will pick you up right in front of the property, allowing you to transition seamlessly from a chef-prepared breakfast to the prime flats of Ascension Bay.
Culinary Experience
Dining at Mayazul Lodge is a "gastronomic voyage" that mirrors the vibrant cultural heritage of Punta Allen and the bountiful treasures of the Caribbean Sea. Each morning begins with a hearty spread of fresh-ground coffee, house-baked pastries, and eggs cooked to your preference, ensuring you are fueled for the day's pursuit of permit. Your time on the water is supported by a customized lunch program, where you select from a daily menu card to curate your boat cooler with fresh, local flavors kept frosty in YETI coolers. As you return to the lodge, the transition to evening is marked by a celebratory open bar featuring cold beers, local spirits, and signature cocktails. Dinner is the true centerpiece of the experience—an à la carte celebration of the finest local produce, from Mahi and Tuna to Hog Snapper and Lobster, all prepared with refined techniques that showcase the essence of our coastal paradise.
