CURRENT REPORT
October is a beautiful month to fly fish Montana and the Missouri River is no exception. BWOs the name of the game on the MO right now. Psuedo mayflies still kicking around, too. These little olive mayflies are a tricky hatch to target, but they should be the focus for anglers subsurface and on top.
For BWO nymphs, we love the Jigged BWO, Green Machine and Psycho May right now. Wire Worms, Zebra Midges, Frenchies, Tailwater Sows, Duracells, Jig PTs also working well.
Keep the dry fly rig ready while you're out there. The peak dry-fly window is certainly in the afternoon as of late. For BWO dries, make sure to have a selection of cripples and duns. We love the Ms. Tickle, Flash Cripple, Last Chance Cripple for the former. Parachute Adams, Tilt Wing Duns and Loop Wing Duns also fooling fish in sizes #18-20.
Streamer fishing has picked up significantly on the MO. Now is the time to swing or strip a big fly and hold on–– Dungeons, Foxy Cleopatras, Articulates Sparkle Minnows are some of our go-tos.
Looking Forward
Fall is here! Get out there while the gettin' is good. Fishing will continue to be good as long as current conditons sustain. Dry-fly anglers, clouds are your friends!
