CURRENT REPORT
Plenty of great fishing to be had on Rock Creek right now. The bulk of the salmonfly hatch has subsided, making way for their smaller counterparts– the goldenstones– to take place.
The Creek has dropped substantially. Flows just below 600cfs at the mouth. If you are floating Rock Creek, be aware that the float-fish window is starting to close. The float-fish season ends on Rock Creek at the of June. Still, very skinny at these flows, making floating difficult.
Goldenstones are the stonefly of choice on Rock Creek now. Our favorite dry flies include the Clark Fork Stone, Break Dancin' Stone, and Morrish's Fluttering Stone. Fish these on their own or hang a nymph underneath. We are fishing Pat's Rubberlegs, Twenty-Inchers, TJ Hookers, Jig Duracells, Hares Ears, Frenchies and TNT Nymphs subsurface.
Not to be forgotten are the Green Drakes, Caddis and Yellow Sallies on Rock Creek. A Loop-Wing Dun, Ms. Tickle or Hatchback Drake will do the trick for those trout looking for Green Drake adults. For Green Drake nymphs, grab a size 10 or 12 Jig PT or Prince Nymph.
It's a great time of year to reach for a big Purple Haze or Brindlechute. For Yellow Sallies and Goldenstones, we like a stimulator in sizes 12-18.
We are also seeing plenty of caddis in the evening, with many PMD's sporadically in the afternoon. While they might not be the "main course" out there right now, keep these smaller hatches in mind. They're getting eaten, too!
Streamer fishing is a great way to start the day. Reach for something flashy that will grab some attention in sunny, clear conditions. We like the Lil Kim, Yellow Yummy, Articulated Sparkle Minnow, Kreelex and Chicago Overcoat.
Looking Forward
We affectionately refer to this time of year as "bug soup" on Rock Creek! Be sure to head up Rock Creek prepared with all of the above– you never know what hatch you will run into this time of year! Terrestrials like ants, hoppers and beetles are on the horizon.
