CURRENT REPORT
Fall is settling in on Rock Creek, and it’s a beautiful time to be on the water. Mornings are brisk now, so no need to break dawn. Aternoons are warming into the 60s, as fall colors take hold along the bank! Flows are stable and clear, making for classic autumn fishing conditions.
Just starting to see our fall hatches in Missoula, lead by the mighty October Caddis. Those skating or twitching a God-like Caddis, small orange Chubby or Stimulator are seeing results. Subsurface, the Squirrel Nymph, Spicy Larva and Bird of Prey are producing fish.
Start the day fishing prioritizing nymphs or small streamers. We're using Pat's Rubberleg, Jig Duracells, Hares Ears, Princes and PT nymphs. Tricos have pretty much wrapped up, making way for those October Caddis, Mahoganies, Psuedos and fall BWOs.
Dry-dropper fishing will improve later in the day. Hang your favorite stonefly or mayfly nymph under a Sweetgrass Hopper, Chernobyl or Henneberry Hopper. Small hoppers, ants and beetles will do the trick throughout the day and evening. Hop-drop-and-roll Hoppers, Morrish Hoppers, Ant Acids, and Glitter Ants.
Streamer fishing has improved dramatically with the recent crummy weather. Our fall favorites on Rock Creek tend to have a lot of yellow. Reach for streamers like the Yellow Yummy, JJ Bugger or Sparkle Minnow. Also working are Mini-Dungeons, Rusty Trombones and Peanut Envies.
Looking Forward
Starting to see October Caddis consistently, which means great hatches of mahogany and BWO mayflies are right around the corner! It feels like fall in Missoula!
