CURRENT REPORT
Great fishing this last week on our beloved Rock Creek.
Sadly, the bulk of the salmonfly hatch is now relegated to the upper portions of Rock Creek. You may see a handful here and there, but they're really keyed-in on the Goldenstones and Green Drakes now.
Don't go up there now expecting July-like flows: it's still high! Wade carefully and be mindful when floating of debris/sweepers.
Dry-dropper fishing has been the most consistent way to fish Rock Creek. Up top, reach for a Chubby Chernobyl, Clark Fork Stone, Dancin Ricky or Fools Gold in sizes #08-12. We are fishing Hatchback Drakes, Flash Cripples and Carnage Drakes for the epic Green Drake hatches on Rock Creek. The best Green Drake fishing happens on a cloudy, drizzly day. Lots of PMDs, Caddis and some Yellow Sallies in the mix too.
Subsurface, reach for a Pat's RL, Explosion Stone, TJ, Jig PTs, Hares Ears, Shuck-its, Duracells and big Prince nymphs.
Stripping and/or swinging a Sparkle Minnow, Bighorn Bugger, or Rusty Trombone has also worked well.
Looking Forward
Flows should continue to drop on Rock Creek. Get out soon if you hope to float Rock Creek... standby for awesome wadefishing conditions soon!
