CURRENT REPORT
Hoot owl restrictions (fishing prohibited 2:00 p.m. to midnight) are in effect for upper Rock Creek - from the confluence of the West and Middle Forks to the mouth of Stoney Creek starting July 11.
Rock Creek is low and clear this time of year. Flows just below 250cfs at the mouth. Waders take note that the riverbed on Rock Creek can be notoriously slippery this time of year. Keep this in mind if you are headed up there and have wading issues.
Terrestrial time on Rock Creek! Be prepared to fish Rock Creek one of two ways: dry-dropper fishing or dry fly fishing with small terrestrials. For the former, our favorite foam dry flies include Chubby Chernobyls, Water Walkers, Henneberry Hoppers and Hippie Stompers. Underneath these, hang a Pat's Rubberleg, Jig Duracell, Spanish Bullet, Frenchie, Prince and PT nymphs. Focus on the swift, deep water as the weather heats up.
For the dry-fly enthusiasts, focus small. Spruce moths kicking it off first thing: Billy's Butterfly, Fathead Moth or Parachute Moth will do the trick. Small hoppers, ants and beetles will do the trick throughout the day and evening. Hop-drop-and-roll Hoppers, Morrish Hoppers, Ant Acids, and Mico-Chubbies. Other great dry flies include a Purple Haze, Rocky Mtn Mint or Brindlechute on Rock Creek.
Streamer fishing is a great way to start the day. Reach for something flashy that will grab some attention in sunny, clear conditions. We like the Lil Kim, Sparkle Minnow, Kreelex and Chicago Overcoat.
