CURRENT REPORT
Salmonflies are here on Rock Creek! Last week's weather (a hearty combo of heavy rain and high temps) bumped Rock Creek up a lot! Now, the Creek has dropped and the salmonfly madness has resumed.
Anglers catching fish on salmonflies throughout Rock Creek right now, although it's fished slower with the "big bug" on the lower Creek (downstream of Nortons.) Don't be afraid to leave the lower portions of the Creek alone and head upstream–– especially if you're looking for the best salmonfly bite.
Reports say the bulk of the hatch is now in the upper half of Rock Creek.
Don't go up there now expecting July-like flows: it's still runoff season! Wade carefully and be mindful when floating of debris/sweepers.
Our favorite salmonflies on Rock Creek have a lot of orange! Dancin' Ricky's, Supa-Dupa Stones, Stone Squatters, Juicy Stones and Cat Pukes are a few of our favorites. Make sure you have some foamy salmonflies for effective dry-dropper fishing, but also some natural-looking salmonfly patterns for your dry-fly-only days. We love the Norm Woods, Sofa Pillow and Emma's Stone.
Subsurface, reach for a Pat's RL, Hot-Bead DBL Bead Stone, Zirdle San Juan Worms, Jig PTs, Hares Ears, Shuck-its, Duracells and big Prince nymphs.
Dead-drifting a Sparkle Minnow, Wolly Bugger, or Bighorn Bugger has also worked well.
Looking Forward
Get in on the salmonfly madness now before it's too late! If you miss it (which you shouldn't,) don't worry–– there's plenty of great dry fly fishing to come. Be on the lookout for goldenstones, green drakes, sallies, PMDs and clouds of caddis in the coming weeks.
