CURRENT REPORT
Rock Creek is low and clear this time of year. Flows just above 150cfs at the mouth. Waders take note that the riverbed on Rock Creek can be notoriously slippery this time of year. Keep this in mind if you are headed up there and have wading issues.
Still very much terrestrial time on Rock Creek! Be prepared to fish Rock Creek one of two ways: dry-dropper fishing or dry fly fishing with small terrestrials. For the former, our favorite foam dry flies include Sweetgrass Hoppers, Henneberry Hoppers and Hippie Stompers and Micro-Chubbies. Underneath these, hang a Pat's Rubberleg, Jig Duracell, Spanish Bullet, Frenchie, Prince and PT nymphs. Fish still congregated in the swift, deep summer water. Small hoppers, ants and beetles will do the trick throughout the day and evening. Hop-drop-and-roll Hoppers, Morrish Hoppers, Ant Acids, and Plan Bs.
Just starting to see our fall hatches in Missoula, lead by the mighty October Caddis. Those skating or twitching a God-like Caddis, small orange Chubby or Stimulator are seeing results. Subsurface, the Squirrel Nymph, Spicy Larva and Bird of Prey are producing fish.
Tricos consistently hatching on our area rivers. While Rock Creek isn't excellent trico water, anglers have seen fish rising to them in spots in the morning. Our favorite tricos are the Tucker's Twiggy, Hanging Midge, Cluster and Hi-Vis Spinner. Hecubas here and there on rainy days, with Mahoganies here and there too. Purple Hazes, CDC Duns and DL Cripples are some of our favorites.
Streamer fishing will only improve as we near October. Reach for something flashy that will grab some attention in sunny, clear conditions. We like the Lil Kim, Sparkle Minnow, Kreelex and Chicago Overcoat.
Looking Forward
Starting to see October Caddis consistently, which means great hatches of mahogany and BWO mayflies are right around the corner! It feels like fall in Missoula!
