CURRENT REPORT
Rock Creek is still in the classic, cold-water winter mode. Flows are low and clear, with temps remaining chilly. Now is a great time to hone in technical winter nymphing tactics. Even with the winter conditions, trout are keyed in deep subsurface.
Staples like stonefly nymphs, worms, and small mayfly or midge nymphs are finding fish. We like the TJ Hooker, DB Stone, Front St Stone, Squirms, Worminators, Prince and PT nymphs. Focus on deep, slow buckets and runs. Getting your nymph in the zone quick and maintaining long, natural drifts is key this time of year.
Dead-drifting or swinging streamers is also productive this time of year. Heavy jig or articulated streamers like Overcoats, Dungeons, Goldies and other natural-colored streamers will produce a willing fish. They are not aggressive by any means. Winter fishing means lazy fish that don't want to chase an erratic streamer. Swinging streamers deep through slow buckets or structure on the Creek will be your best bet.
