CURRENT REPORT
Plenty of great fishing to be had on Rock Creek right now. The bulk of the salmonfly hatch has subsided, making way for their smaller counterparts– the goldenstones– to take place.
The Creek has dropped substantially over the last week. Flows hovering around 800cfs near the mouth. If you are floating Rock Creek, be aware that the float-fish window is starting to close. The float-fish season ends on Rock Creek at the of June.
Flows are still high on Rock creek, yet much more managable for the wade angler at its current state. Anglers will find a handful of salmonflies on upper Rock Creek. A smaller salmonfly dry (like a Stimulator, Chubby or Rogue Stone) will do the trick if you are looking to scratch the salmonfly itch.
Goldenstones starting to be the stonefly of choice for Rock Creek now. Our favorite dry flies include the Clark Fork Stone, Break Dancin' Stone, and Morrish's Fluttering stone. Fish these on their own or hang a nymph underneath. We are fishing Pat's Rubberlegs, Twenty-Inchers, TJ Hookers, Jig Duracells, Hares Ears, Frenchies and TNT Nymphs subsurface.
Trout target stoneflies close to the bank and structure: both for nymphs that crawl to shore to emerge and for clumsy, winged adults that fall/lay eggs on the surface. Fish tight to structure and/or along willows or cutbanks and you'll see results!
Green Drakes starting to show themselves, too. A Loop-Wing Dun, Ms. Tickle or Hatchback Drake will do the trick for those trout looking up. For Green Drake nymphs, grab a size 10 or 12 Jig PT or Prince Nymph.
We are also seeing plenty of caddis in the evening, with many PMD's sporadically in the afternoon. While they might not be the "main course" out there right now, keep these smaller hatches in mind. They're getting eaten, too!
Streamer fishing is a great way to start the day. Reach for something "noisier" that will cause a commotion in the highwater. We like the Big Horn Bugger, Yellow Yummy, Articulated Sparkle Minnow, Dungeon and Chicago Overcoat.
Looking Forward
Salmonflies will move up the Creek every day this week. As the hatch progresses, so will the Green Drakes, Golden Stones, PMDs and Yellow Sallies. We affectionately refer to this as "bug soup" on Rock Creek! Be sure to head up Rock Creek prepared with all of the above– you never know what hatch you will run into this time of year!
