CURRENT REPORT
Rock Creek caught us by surprise and bumped to a whopping 1,200cfs this week. It's now trending in the right direction, however, and is dropping hard. It should come into better shape over the weekend.
Now is a great time to explore Rock Creek. We're starting to see the occasional skwala here and there, with BWOs and midges out in the afternoon.
Focus your efforts subsurface to start the day. Stonefly Nymphs, Prince nymphs, Jig PTs and San Juan worms under a bobber would be the way to go. As the day progresses, reach for smaller jig nymphs to target the emerging mayflies. Some of our favorites include the Duracells, Thrashers, soft hackle PTs and Blow Torches. Fish these behind a large, heavy nymph or drop it under a foam dry fly 2'-3'.
Don't be afraid to throw a skwala around in the afternoon. The dry fly bite hasn't been super successful yet, but it will be any day now. Our favorites are the Plan B, Clark Fork stone and Water Walkers.
Streamer fishing flashy streamers like Kreelex, Jig Yummyies or Sparkle Minnows have moved some nice fish, too.
Looking Forward
Look for prolific hatches of skwalas, BWOs and March Browns to kick off up Rock Creek in the near future. We're seeing all of the above crawling along the bank right now. Great dry fly fishing ahead!
