5 guide recommended tried and true fly fishing gear essentials
Looking for the latest and greatest in fly fishing gear? Spending every day on the water gives our guides the unique perspective of understanding what fly fishing gear will provide the most value and last the longest. Our goal is to provide our customers with top of the line products that offer performance and comfort. Whether you’re a seasoned die-hard or just entering the sport, let our guides point you in the right direction your next gear purchase.
Here’s our list of 5 pieces of fly fishing gear that our guides believe are tried and true!
1. Simms Gore-Text Waders
Not only are they made in Montana, but they keep you dry. The old saying; “You get what you pay for” comes into play with waders. Spend a little more now on Simms Classic Guide, G3, G4 Pro or G4Z’s and keep yourself warm, dry and comfortable.
2. Fluorocarbon Tippet
USE IT! Buy mono leaders and add Fluro Tippet. It is stronger, it’s more invisible underwater, and you will catch more fish. We love Trout Hunter, Umpqua Phantom X or Rio’s new Fluoroflex Strong.
3. Polarized Sunglasses
Arguably the most important piece of fishing equipment. If you cannot see what is going on, then why bother fishing. Costa and Smith provide the utmost quality in fishing eyewear. They protect your eye safety, take the glare off the water’s surface, and help you see fish underwater. My favorite lens is the Smith ChromaPop Green Mirror on the Guides Choice Frame
4. Hats
You have got to protect your head and face. A wide brim hat cuts the glare and eliminates sunburn. Great hats for sun protection are Grizzly Hackle’s Sun Hat, Fishpond’s Eddy River and Low Country Hats.
5. Fly Lines
Properly line your rod with the appropriate fly line. Not only will it help you load your rod, but it will also provide accuracy, and that only helps you catch more fish! Old, cracked fly lines will soak up with water and they start to sink. Dry Fly Fishing and a fly line with a sinking tip is not a recipe for success. Like most products, buy the best you can afford, and have a more successful day on the water. A shop favorite is the Scientific Anglers Amplitude Smooth Infinity Taper in a Weight Forward Design.
